The Africa Blue Economy Strategy, developed after the 2018 Sustainable Blue Economy Conference in Nairobi, aims to guide sustainable development and utilization of Africa's aquatic resources. It addresses the continent's extensive marine resources and vulnerability to climate change. The strategy provides guidance to AU member states and regional institutions to develop inclusive and sustainable blue economies, contributing to continental transformation and growth. Key focus areas include marine and aquatic biotechnology, environmental sustainability, shipping industry growth, transport development on water bodies, fishing management, and deep-sea resource exploitation. The strategy addresses several key challenges: (i) blue governance, (ii) economic and social challenges, (iii) nutritional challenges, (iv) environmental challenges, and (v) technical challenges. These technical challenges encompass blue economy activities and components, aiming for better governance, maritime spatial planning and coordination, an integrated approach to marine ecosystems, and ensuring the safety and security of maritime surveillance.
