The National Plan to Combat Garbage at Sea is one of the priority national goals of the Federal Government's 100-day Agenda and represents the first phase of a National Agenda for Urban Environmental Quality, which will also include phases to be launched in the following months relating to waste management, urban green areas, air quality, water quality and sanitation and contaminated areas. The National Plan aims to achieve a change in the National scenario of the amount of garbage originated from land-based sources and dumped at sea, causing major impacts on the marine environment and human health. The National Plan has the following objectives: 1. Reduce the amount and impacts of garbage at sea from land-based sources; 2. Reduce the amount and impacts of waste from maritime sources, including solid waste, lost cargo, abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear, and abandoned vessels; 3. Reducing the amount and impacts of solid waste accumulated on the coast and in coastal and ocean waters; 4. Promoting research, development of technologies and methodologies to combat litter at sea; 5. Carrying out environmental education activities, engaging society and communicating about the impacts of garbage at sea, and the need for better solid waste management. The proposed objectives are intended to reduce the impacts on marine and coastal ecosystems as much as possible and, above all, to provide a better quality of life for Brazilian citizens.
