The National Strategy and Action Plan to combat desertification (NSAPCD) outlines the strategies, objectives, and actions the country will implement in its efforts against desertification. The timeframe of the NSAPCD is 7 years covering the period from 2024 to 2030. The main purpose of this policy is to create a resilient environment and socio-economic structure that will help mitigate desertification risks by 2030. The NSAPCD aligns directly with the Sustainable Development Goal of achieving a “Land Degradation Neutral (LDN) World" and incorporates social, economic, scientific, and technological dimensions into desertification management. This policy is built on six main axes, namely: 1. policy and strategy development; 2. LDN and sustainable use of natural resources; 3. national and international coordination and cooperation; 4. socio-economic activities; 5. R&D activities; and 6. monitoring and evaluation. New policy and legal frameworks will be developed to strengthen efforts on combating desertification and land degradation. Sustainable use of natural resources will be ensured by restoring and rehabilitating degraded areas in agricultural, forest and pasture lands; increasing the resilience of urban and rural areas to the impacts of climate change; and by promoting the conservation, improvement, and sustainable use of water resources. The coordination at the national, regional and international levels in combating desertification and land degradation will be strengthened, and effective cooperation mechanisms will be established for a sustainable solution. Measures will be undertaken to improve the living conditions of populations affected by land degradation, enhance their resilience and to reduce rural-to-urban migration. The capacity, functionality, and effectiveness of R&D will be increased for effectively combating desertification. The National Monitoring Systems for Combating Desertification/Land Degradation will be developed, and data produced by monitoring systems will be reported periodically. Furthermore, scientific research and studies will be carried out on the socio-economic situation of communities affected by desertification. The capacity of the Directorate General of combating desertification and erosion under the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, will be increased.
