National Hydrogen Strategy 2024.

The 2024 National Hydrogen Strategy sets out Australia’s plan to become a global leader in renewable hydrogen production, use, and export as part of its legislated commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The strategy identifies hydrogen as a critical complement to electrification for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy transport, industrial processes, and power generation. It outlines a vision for a clean, safe, and competitive hydrogen industry that delivers economic benefits, supports regional communities, and strengthens Australia’s role in global energy markets. Key objectives include achieving cost-competitive hydrogen supply, stimulating demand in priority sectors, ensuring community benefits, and establishing large-scale trade and investment partnerships. Australia targets producing at least 15 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually by 2050, with a stretch potential of 30 million tonnes, and aims to export up to 1.2 million tonnes per year by 2030. Measures to achieve these goals include the Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive, the Hydrogen Headstart program, concessional finance, and investment in hydrogen hubs and infrastructure. The strategy prioritises hydrogen use in green metals, ammonia, and low-carbon fuels, while promoting research, innovation, and workforce development. It addresses regulatory reforms, safety standards, and water resource planning to ensure sustainable industry growth. International engagement through bilateral and multilateral partnerships, certification schemes, and co-investment mechanisms is central to securing Australia’s position in emerging global hydrogen markets. Regular monitoring through annual State of Hydrogen reports and five-yearly reviews will track progress against production and export milestones.
