The 2025 update of Germany’s Sustainable Development Strategy (GSDS) serves as the country’s central framework for implementing the UN 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It reinforces sustainable development as a core principle guiding all federal policy, rooted in intergenerational fairness, respect for planetary limits, and the commitment to “leave no one behind.” The strategy aligns national goals with the SDGs, integrates them into government structures, and emphasizes coordinated action across ministries and levels of government. It also places Germany’s efforts within a broader global context marked by overlapping crises and ongoing reforms to international systems. The GSDS is structured around six key transformation areas, including social well-being, climate action, circular economy, sustainable infrastructure, food systems, and pollution reduction. It outlines goals, current measures, and future steps for each, while highlighting cross-cutting priorities such as social equity, climate neutrality by 2045, biodiversity protection, and sustainable economic practices. Implementation is driven by five main levers: governance, public participation, financing, innovation and digitalization, and international cooperation. The strategy also strengthens monitoring through updated indicators, particularly in social areas, and underscores the need for faster, more coordinated action beyond 2030.
