Maritime Security Act 2004.

The Maritime Security Act 2004 implements in Ireland the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation and the related Protocol for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Fixed Platforms Located on the Continental Shelf, both adopted in Rome on 10 March 1988. The Act establishes a legal framework to combat terrorism and other unlawful acts endangering ships, maritime navigation and offshore fixed platforms. It defines relevant terms, including ships, fixed platforms and Convention States, and applies both within Irish jurisdiction and, in specified circumstances, extraterritorially to acts involving Irish ships, Irish citizens or offenders found within the State. The Act creates a series of serious criminal offences relating to the seizure or control of ships or offshore platforms by force, acts of violence against persons on board, destruction or damage to vessels, platforms or navigation facilities, placement of destructive devices, communication of false information that endangers navigation, and related threats, attempts, injuries or killings.
