National Agricultural Extension Policy, 2020.

The National Agricultural Extension Policy 2020 overarching objective is to establish a modern, sustainable, climate-resilient and profitable agricultural sector through an effective agricultural extension system that delivers technology, knowledge and advisory services to farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs. The policy seeks to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen food and nutrition security, improve farmers’ incomes and livelihoods, promote safe and quality food production, and support the commercialisation of agriculture. It further aims to enhance the adoption of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), improve post-harvest management, facilitate value-chain development, and encourage the participation of women, youth and marginal farmers in agricultural production and agribusiness activities. The policy also focuses on addressing emerging challenges facing the agricultural sector, including climate change, natural disasters, land degradation, water scarcity and market constraints. It promotes the use of information and communication technologies, digital extension services, farmer organisations, participatory research, and stronger coordination among government agencies, research institutions, the private sector and civil society. By encouraging innovation, sustainable resource management, mechanisation, environmental protection and capacity-building, the policy aims to transform agricultural extension into a farmer-centred service that supports resilient rural development and contributes to achieving national development goals and the Sustainable Development Goals. More specifically, the policy promotes the dissemination of improved production technologies, capacity-building, advisory services, disease management, value-chain development and market-oriented production for livestock and poultry producers. Accordingly, animal production is one of the sectors covered by the policy, although the instrument is not exclusively devoted to livestock; rather, it addresses livestock within the wider context of agricultural development, food security, income generation and sustainable rural development.
