National Forest Policy, 2025.

The National Forestry Policy, 2025 of Bangladesh aims to modernise forest governance and align forest management with sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities. The policy seeks to increase forest and tree cover, conserve forests, wildlife and ecosystems, enhance ecosystem services, and integrate forestry objectives with national and international commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Forestry Master Plan, the Bangladesh National REDD+ Strategy, and the country’s climate and biodiversity frameworks. It emphasises participatory forest management, the protection of natural resources, and the sustainable use of forests to support environmental security and socio-economic development. The policy’s principal objectives include raising Bangladesh’s forest and tree cover to approximately 30% of the country’s land area by 2050, expanding protected areas, strengthening biodiversity conservation, restoring degraded forests and watersheds, increasing carbon sequestration, and enhancing resilience to climate change. It further promotes the recognition of the rights and participation of indigenous peoples and local communities through free, prior and informed consent, supports forest-based livelihoods, encourages afforestation and reforestation, improves wildlife protection and enforcement against wildlife crime, and strengthens research, education, capacity-building, and institutional coordination for the long-term sustainable management of forest resources.
