This Wetland Strategy and Action Plan sets out a ten-year framework for the conservation, restoration, sustainable use and governance of wetlands in The Gambia. The Strategy’s vision is that, by 2035, The Gambia’s wetlands should be functioning, resilient and equitably managed ecosystems. The Strategy is built around six objectives: 1) protecting high-value wetlands and their ecological integrity, including improved protected-area management, stronger enforcement and prevention of habitat conversion and pollution; 2) restoration of degraded wetlands and increasing resilience, including mangrove rehabilitation, freshwater wetland restoration, invasive-species control; 3) promoting sustainable and inclusive use, particularly sustainable fisheries, oyster harvesting, agriculture, ecotourism and alternative livelihoods, with particular attention to women and youth; 4) integrating wetlands into sectoral policies and land-use planning; 5) strengthening institutional, legal and financial frameworks; 6) raising awareness, building capacity and improving stakeholder participation.
