The Contracting Parties adopted this Protocol to lay down, in implementation of the Alpine Convention, international measures to preserve and promote mountain farming which suits local conditions and is environmentally compatible. The Protocol aims particularly at recognizing and securing the continuity of its essential contribution to maintaining the population and safeguarding sustainable economic activities, safeguarding the natural environment, preventing natural risks and conserving the beauty and recreational value of nature and the countryside and of cultural life in the Alpine region.
