The Veterinary Act of the Canton of Schwyz regulates the implementation of federal and cantonal veterinary legislation, establishing the responsibilities of cantonal and municipal authorities for animal health, animal welfare, food safety, disease prevention and control, and veterinary professions. It defines the powers of the cantonal veterinary service, regulates the registration and identification of animals, particularly dogs, provides measures for the prevention and management of animal diseases, and sets rules on livestock markets, disposal of animal by-products, emergency slaughter, and compensation for losses caused by disease control measures. The Act also governs veterinary and other animal health professions, including licensing, emergency service obligations, and the handling of veterinary medicinal products. In addition, it establishes financing arrangements for veterinary services and disease-control activities, prescribes enforcement procedures and penalties for violations, and promotes cooperation between cantonal, municipal, and inter-cantonal authorities to safeguard animal health, animal welfare, and public health.
