U.S.-China Joint Announcement on Climate Change

This Joint Statement on climate change was issued after Chinese and U.S. presidents held talks in Beijing, aiming to strengthen cooperation in tackling the global challenge and reducing greenhouse gases. The two Governments agreed that two countries have a critical role to play in combating global climate change, one of the greatest threats facing humanity. The two Governments announced their respective action goals for coping with climate change after 2020. The carbon emission target for China is to peak by 2030, or earlier if possible. China intends to increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 20% by 2030. The target for the United States is to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by the year 2025. The two Governments agreed to push forward international climate change talks at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris for a new agreement to be reached, and to deepen practical cooperation in the fields of clean energy and environment protection between the two countries.
