The present Regulation is made under the Dangerous Goods Handling and Transportation Act. In particular, the Regulation updates the system of identification of hazardous waste, supports the development of a system consistent with industry needs and federal regulatory requirements, improves storage requirements for hazardous waste, and reduces paperwork requirements while still maintaining the department’s ability to track hazardous waste shipments and identify potential issues. The management system for hazardous waste involves the registration of hazardous waste generators, and the licensing of hazardous waste carriers and hazardous waste receivers. The hazardous waste movement document/manifest (a special shipping document for hazardous waste that is completed by the generator, carrier and receiver of the waste) provides the means for tracking the movement of hazardous waste.
