National Waterfowl Genetic Improvement Plan (2020-2035).

This National Waterfowl Genetic Improvement Plan (2020-2035) is formulated to accelerate the cultivation of improved waterfowl varieties in China, improve the development level and innovation ability of waterfowl breeding sector, enhance the competitiveness in international market, and promote the healthy, stable and sustainable development of waterfowl sector. China is one of the countries with the richest waterfowl genetic resources in the world. According to the second national survey of livestock and poultry genetic resources, there are 32 Local duck breeds and 30 goose breeds. China's waterfowl genetic resources are not only numerous, but also complete in types and different in germplasm characteristics. The overall objective of the Plan is set up to establish a complete modern commercial breeding system for meat ducks, laying ducks, geese and Muscovy ducks, as well as a semi-Muscovy duck breeding system, and cultivate more than 10 new varieties of waterfowl and supporting lines by 2035. The market share of self-cultivated meat duck varieties will reached more than 80%, laying ducks more than 90%, geese more than 80%, and Muscovy ducks and semi-Muscovy ducks 50%. The mainstream varieties will be internationally competitive by 2035. To achieve the overall objective, the Plan proposes the main tasks, which include: 1. Clarify the main characteristics of new waterfowl varieties that meet the needs of all parts of China, formulate corresponding breeding schemes, guide variety breeding, expand the market share of core varieties, and cultivate new waterfowl varieties with international competitiveness; 2. Build a number of waterfowl breeding enterprises with great influence at home and abroad, and establish national waterfowl breeding bases to meet the needs of different markets for high-quality waterfowl; 3. Formulate and improve waterfowl production performance measurement technology and management specifications, carry out waterfowl genetic data analysis, and establish a performance measurement system; 4. Carry out research and development of new technologies for waterfowl breeding and industrialization of new varieties, accelerate the application of information technology and internet in breeding; 5. Prevent and control major waterfowl diseases.
