This policy takes FAO International Plan of action for the conservation and management of sharks as a reference and aims to contribute to its general objective (the conservation and management of sharks and their long-term sustainable use worldwide) by ensuring the rebuilding of many depleted stocks fished by the Community fleet within and outside Community waters. To this end, this Community Action Plan sets its targets following three specific objectives: (I) capacity building on shark fisheries and on shark species and their role in the ecosystem, (II) directed fisheries for shark to be ensured in a sustainable manner and effective management of by-catches of shark resulting from other fisheries, and (III) coherent approach between the internal and external Community policy for sharks.
