This document intends to present the high-level vision of the Italian government on the role that hydrogen can occupy the national path of decarbonization. It constitutes an introduction aimed at framing the discussion that will lead to a detailed Italian Strategy for Hydrogen. Hydrogen, especially if produced from renewable energy sources, will be largely applied in Italy, for the next decade, in the field of transport, railways and industry, particularly in those segments in which hydrogen is already used as a raw material, for example in the sector chemicals and oil refining. In addition, the mixing of hydrogen in the gas network can also serve to anticipate and stimulate the hydrogen market growth. The so called hydrogen valleys, ecosystems that include both the production and consumption of hydrogen, will also lead to other possible applications of hydrogen. Finally, some small-scale pilot projects are planned also in other sectors (local public transport, in the biological methanation or in secondary steelmaking sites. Efforts will be concentrated on two fronts. On the one hand, on the definition of concrete design ideas taking into account the outcome of discussions undertaken with stakeholders involved in the hydrogen sector and hydrogen-related projects and which also include the themes of Research and Development. On the other hand, on the possible drafting of policies to support the development of the hydrogen market in Italy.
