This Agri-Nutrition Implementation Strategy, in compliance with Sustainable Development Goals, offers practical guidance on strategic interventions for decision makers to contribute towards sustained reduction of high malnutrition levels. The Strategy focuses on accelerating the implementation of other related Policy instruments, in order to protect vulnerable populations by providing them with quantity and quality of food available and affordable, and to increase the linkage between agriculture and food security for all Kenyans. The Strategy describes six focus areas of interventions that support the implementation of nutrition sensitive programs and offer solutions to malnutrition from an agriculture perspective: governance and coordination; equitable and quality nutrition sensitive agriculture interventions; availability, access and consumption of safe diverse foods; Public-Private partnership to support nutrition sensitive agricultural interventions; community empowerment; monitoring, evaluation and knowledge management of agri-nutrition interventions. Topics covered by this Strategy include: food safety, standards and control; food availability and access; school nutrition and nutrition awareness; food and nutrition security information; early warning and emergency management. For each focus area, the Strategy identifies strategic and specific objectives and expected outcomes: improvement of regulatory requirements, policy environment and multi-sectoral governance for implementation of agri-nutritional interventions; increasing the capacity of agriculture workers, livestock producers and fishery officers on nutrition sensitive agriculture, for a better production of safe, diversified and nutritious food; overcoming barriers that hinder access to adequate consumption of nutritious and safe diets: poverty, climate variability, cultural beliefs, food preferences, inaccessibility to health care services, gender inequalities, inadequate knowledge on nutrition; improvement of locally produced foods by smallholder farmers; improvement of post-harvest handling, processing technologies and food marketing systems; enhancing the participation of private sectors and other non-state actors and access to safe, diverse and nutrient-dense foods through appropriate private sector led business development services; increasing food access through agricultural production, with actions focused on: livestock and fish production, irrigation, agro-forestry, crops production, appropriate technologies.
