This conservation measure applies to exploratory fisheries using trawl or longline methods, except for cases where specific exemptions have been granted by the Commission. It emphasizes the importance of conducting fishing operations across a wide geographical and bathymetric range to assess fishery potential and prevent over-concentration of catch and effort. Additionally, the measure outlines procedures for precise reporting of catch and effort, closure of small-scale research units (SSRUs) when catch limits are reached, regulation of by-catch, and reporting of discarded Dissostichus eleginoides and Dissostichus mawsoni, including those with the 'jellymeat' condition. Vessels participating in the 2022/23 exploratory fisheries for Dissostichus spp. must have appointed scientific observers, follow specified data collection and reporting plans, and promptly inform the Secretariat of any changes in their participation plans.
