Ensuring availability and affordability of fertilisers.

This Communication addresses global fertiliser crisis which impacts food security, especially in the most vulnerable countries in the world. It outlines EU's steps to ensure availability and affordability of fertilisers at the EU and global level, including diversifying imports and supporting sustainable practices, in order to stabilize markets and support global food security. This Communication lays down measures to optimize fertiliser use and enhance sustainability: (I) providing targeted financial support to farmers and fertiliser producers; (II) promoting transparency in the fertiliser and food supply chains; (III) encouraging sustainable farming practices, such as nutrient management plans, soil health improvement, precision farming, organic practices, and leguminous crop use; (IV) substituting mineral fertilisers with organic alternatives to reduce the EU’s reliance on gas and lower the sector’s carbon footprint; (V) encouraging investments in clean hydrogen and biomethane for ammonia production to contribute to greener fertiliser production; (VI) developing a market for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen-based fertilisers; and (VII) import diversification for seeking alternative fertiliser suppliers. The EU will provide support for partner countries to reduce their reliance on imported fertilisers and dependence on mineral fertilisers by investing in alternatives, including organic fertilisers, and also sustainable agriculture and soil fertility management. The EU intends to enhance its humanitarian food assistance, directing funds toward improving food security and nutrition for vulnerable populations. The specific approaches will vary based on country and regional circumstances.
