One Health Communication Strategy for Antimicrobial Resistance 2024 - 2027.

The One Health Communication Strategy for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a multisectoral framework designed to raise awareness about the misuse of antibiotics across various sectors. It emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration among healthcare professionals, veterinarians, policymakers, researchers, and community leaders. Through targeted communication campaigns, educational initiatives, and stakeholder engagement, this Strategy promotes responsible antimicrobial use and advocates for policy reforms to combat AMR effectively. By fostering cooperation and shared responsibility, it aims to protect public health, safeguard animal welfare, and preserve the environment, securing a healthier future for all Egyptians. Many healthcare planners and policymakers assume that increasing awareness will lead to behavioral change, particularly given the government’s commitment to AMR, the availability of technical expertise, and a robust mass media presence. Therefore, developing this One Health Communication Strategy was essential. It provides a structured approach to improving awareness through risk communication and education while establishing a coordinated action plan. This plan prioritizes key activities and incorporates measurable indicators to track progress and ensure effective implementation. The specific objectives of the Communication Strategy are as follows (i) raise public awareness about the causes, risks, and consequences of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR); (ii) enhance interdisciplinary collaboration to facilitate a coordinated One Health approach to combat AMR effectively; (iii) promote responsible antimicrobial use in both human and animal health sectors; (iv) advocate for Policy Changes to combat AMR effectively. The One Health Communication Strategy for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) seeks to enhance awareness and encourage responsible antimicrobial use across multiple sectors. In healthcare, it educates providers on AMR risks, antimicrobial stewardship, infection control, and the economic impact of misuse through training materials, workshops, and targeted communication. Community members receive information on antibiotic misuse, prevention strategies, and the importance of vaccinations via social media, mass media, and educational campaigns. The animal health sector, including farmers, veterinarians, and feed producers, is engaged through training and outreach on biosecurity, responsible antibiotic use, and the risks of AMR transmission between animals and humans. Policymakers are provided policy briefs and participate in discussions to strengthen national regulations. By leveraging diverse channels such as media, workshops, digital tools, and community engagement, this Strategy ensures the effective dissemination of key messages to combat AMR. The Strategy also focuses on environmental health, targeting workers in the poultry and livestock sectors, slaughterhouses, dairy factories, fish farms, and boats. It emphasizes the importance of rational antibiotic use to protect health and resources, personal hygiene as a preventive measure, responsible pesticide use, and proper waste management. Fishermen and hunters are encouraged to adopt better waste disposal practices to protect marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Local and rural communities, as well as tourist companies, are engaged in AMR awareness efforts. Academia, including school teachers and researchers, plays a key role in generating AMU/AMR data and advocating for AMR to be integrated into educational curricula. Various communication channels such as TV, social media, and community meetings help spread awareness, supported by tools like giveaways, WhatsApp messages, awareness videos, board games, and educational materials.
