National Strategy for Food Fortification (2016-2021).

The Food Fortification Strategy (2016-2020) offers an opportunity to update the strategic orientation and food fortification activities of the last five years, and to draw up a national strategy for the implementation of food fortification, aligned with the advances observed in the area of fortification such as Decree 9/2016 approving the regulation on fortification of industrially processed micronutrient foods, as well as with national policies to combat chronic malnutrition. The aim of the strategy is to define actions that will contribute to increasing the coverage of micronutrient-fortified food consumption to above 80% among the Mozambican population. This objective will contribute to global efforts to reduce the prevalence of anemia by 50% over the next 15 years. The target is based on the evidence that micronutrient deficiencies are a reality in the country and on the evidence that food fortification is a cost-effective intervention to complement the reduction of deficiency levels, if the population's consumption of fortified foods is increased. This objective serves as an indicator for the program to reach its full potential in order to improve results over the next 5 years (2016-2020). To have a considerable impact, most public health interventions must have above 80% coverage. The expected long-term results of this strategy are to contribute to reducing the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies and improving the nutritional status, human well-being and productivity of the population. Five Strategic Objectives (SO) have been identified to achieve greater coverage of fortified food consumption to above 80% among the Mozambican population, and these are described below. SO1: Strengthen the Capacity of Industries to Comply with National Food Fortification Standards; SO2: Strengthen the Capacity of Inspection Institutions to Effectively Monitor Fortified Foods (at all levels); SO3: Increase Coverage and Determine the Impact of Fortified Foods on the Population; SO4: Strengthen CONFAM's Multisectoral Coordination Capacity; SO5: Increase Awareness and Demand for Fortified Foods.
