This Recommendation sets measures for fishing operations of sturgeons (Acipenseridae) in the Black Sea (geographical subarea 29) during the marine part of their life cycle. The overall objective of this Recommendation is to strengthen the conservation of sturgeons at the regional level, complementing national and supranational measures in place. This Recommendation requires the contracting parties and cooperating non-contracting parties fishing for commercial or recreational purposes in the Black Sea to implement such measures for any fisheries related directly or indirectly to sturgeons, in accordance with the objectives set by this Recommendation. This Recommendation seeks to combat IUU fishing, reduce market risks and foster stakeholder participation in the Black Sea. It promotes a participatory approach to raising awareness and sharing best practices. The IUCN classifies sturgeon species of the Acipenseridae family as critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable in the Black Sea. Therefore, they shall be included in the GFCM regional plan of action to monitor and mitigate interactions between fisheries and vulnerable species in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, adopted by Resolution GFCM/46/2023/4.
