Resolution GFCM/47/2024/1 on a roadmap for a joint project to collect all required and identified scientific evidence to provide a basis for the discussion of potential additional measures for the long-term portion of the management plan for demersal fisheries in the Strait of Sicily, in response to Recommendation GFCM/45/2022/4.

This Resolution identifies a roadmap involving all relevant contracting parties and cooperating non-contracting parties, and under the coordination of the GFCM Secretariat, to be launched in the context of a joint project under the MedSea4Fish progamme. The roadmap shall provide for the collection of all required and identified scientific evidence to be the basis for the discussion of potential additional measures to be addressed for the period covering 2026–2030 of the Strait of Sicily demersal stocks management plan set out by Recommendation GFCM/45/2022/4. The roadmap will help to better understand and gain more information on: (i) the different sources of fishing mortality of European hake; (ii) the impacts of the different types of gear on the size structure of European hake; and (iii) the different potential measures available to ensure the sustainable exploitation of European hake and other key species, including fisheries restricted areas and technical and market measures for the protection of juveniles. This Resolution shall apply in the Strait of Sicily (geographical subareas 12 to 16).
