Global Gateway.

The Global Gateway is an EU plan for major investment in infrastructure development worldwide by 2027. It aims to strengthen smart, clean, and secure connections in key sectors such as digital, energy, transport, health, and education. The long-term impact of the EU’s Global Gateway is expected to be transformative across multiple dimensions—economic, geopolitical, environmental, and social—especially in partner countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The Global Gateway is a climate-neutral initiative and designed to support partner countries in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement targets, while also enhancing the EU’s geopolitical influence and supply chain resilience. The initiative aims at accelerating sustainable development and post-crisis recovery, while fostering inclusive economic growth and job creation. It supports the shift toward a cleaner, circular global economy through strategic investments in infrastructure that is environmentally sound, resilient to climate impacts, and aligned with net-zero emission goals. All projects will honor the European Green Deal’s principle to “do no harm” by incorporating thorough environmental impact and strategic assessments throughout their development. The initiative aims to close the global infrastructure investment gap to boost EU's competitiveness, deliver benefits and protections for the partner countries, empower local communities and tackle most pressing global challenges from climate change and sustainable development to health protection, food security, gender equality and education systems. The EU will mobilize investments and provide assistance to other countries whilst contributing to the promotion of its own interests, to strengthening the resilience of its supply chains, and to opening up more trade opportunities for the EU economy. By promoting high-quality, climate-resilient infrastructure and inclusive growth, the initiative supports long-term development goals while helping countries' transition to green and digital economies. It is designed to catalyze private investment through de-risking tools, such as guarantees, to foster innovation, competitiveness, and resilience in partner economies. By aligning EU standards with local contexts, Global Gateway encourages regulatory convergence and trade facilitation, which can lead to stronger economic partnerships and improved market access over time. It promotes democratic values and good governance by ensuring that infrastructure investments are transparent, inclusive, and aligned with international standards such as human rights and the rule of law. It fosters equal partnerships with countries worldwide, emphasizing accountability, stakeholder engagement, and sound financial management throughout project implementation
