This ICCAT Resolution establishes the process for developing initial management objectives for Atlantic bluefin tuna, consistent with the Convention’s aim of maintaining stocks at levels that support maximum sustainable yield (MSY). It tasks Panel 2 with formulating operational objectives for eastern and western stocks, considering candidate objectives on stock status, safety, yield, and stability, while allowing for their modification, supplementation, or rejection. The resolution highlights the need for timeframes and recognizes that quantitative targets may differ between stocks. Panel 2’s recommendations are to be reviewed by the Bluefin Tuna management strategy evaluations (MSE) Technical Modelling Group and the Standing Committee on Research and Statistics (SCRS) Bluefin Tuna Species Group before submission to the Commission.
