On Climate Change (Amendment to Res. C-23-10)(C-24-10).

The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) has integrated climate change as a permanent agenda item from 2024 onward in meetings of the Working Group on Ecosystem and Bycatch (EBWG), the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), and the Commission itself. The EBWG addresses climate change impacts on fisheries and advises on necessary amendments to resolutions. The SAC focuses on synthesizing the best scientific information on climate effects on target and non-target species and ecosystems to guide management strategies. The IATTC scientific staff incorporates climate change considerations into stock assessments and strategy evaluations, proposing data collection plans related to ocean changes such as warming, acidification, and hypoxia. Additionally, the Commission plans a virtual climate workshop in early 2025 to discuss implementation of the science workplan, while also exploring options to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations, including hybrid meeting formats.
