Zoonotic Disease: Prevention and Control Strategy 2025-2029.

This AU One Health Zoonotic Disease Prevention and Control Strategy (2025–2029) addresses Africa’s growing vulnerability to zoonotic diseases, which account for 33% of public health emergencies on the continent. These diseases, including Ebola, Rift Valley fever, and Mpox, pose severe health, economic, and ecological risks, driven by factors such as population growth, habitat destruction, and climate change. The strategy emphasizes a One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health sectors to reduce morbidity, mortality, and economic losses while aligning with AU Agenda 2063 and global frameworks. The Strategy focuses on five strategic priorities: improving governance through multisectoral coordination, strengthening diagnostics and surveillance systems, building resilience via research, innovation, and local manufacturing of vaccines and diagnostics, enhancing emergency preparedness and response, and promoting advocacy and awareness. These priorities are supported by key pillars that emphasize integrated One Health approaches, capacity building, digitalization of data systems, harmonized regulatory frameworks, and community engagement.
