Directive (EU) 2016/1629 laying down technical requirements for inland waterway vessels, amending Directive 2009/100/EC and repealing Directive 2006/87/EC.

This Directive establishes the technical requirements necessary to ensure the safety of craft navigating on the inland waterways referred to in Article 4; and the classification of those inland waterways. It applies to vessels 20 meters or more in length, vessels where 𝐿 × 𝐵 × 𝐷 is a volume of 100 cubic metres or more, tugs/pushers, passenger vessels, and floating equipment. This Directive does not apply to ferries, naval vessels, or sea-going ships operating occasionally on inland waters. It classifies waterways into Zone 1, 2, 3, and 4, plus Zone R (Rhine Navigation). This Directive establishes harmonized Union inland navigation certificates, ensuring mutual recognition across EU Member States.
