The National Fertilizer Plan 2050 (PNF 2050) of Brazil is a long-term strategic framework aimed at reducing the country’s heavy dependence on imported fertilizers and strengthening the resilience, competitiveness, and sustainability of its fertilizer sector. The plan identifies Brazil as one of the largest global consumers of fertilizers, yet highly dependent on foreign supply, which exposes its agricultural production and food security to external shocks. Its main objective is to expand domestic production capacity and ensure a stable supply of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) through industrial development, diversification of supply sources, and improved logistics. The plan also seeks to address structural constraints such as high production costs, weak infrastructure, and limited integration between research, innovation, and industry. To achieve these objectives, the plan outlines strategic guidelines focused on modernizing the national fertilizer industry, improving the regulatory and investment environment, strengthening research and development, and promoting sustainable and innovative practices. Key actions include expanding production facilities, enhancing logistics and storage systems, fostering public–private partnerships, and supporting alternative inputs such as biofertilizers, organominerals, and recycled materials within a circular economy approach. The plan also emphasizes environmental sustainability, reduced emissions, and alignment with international best practices, while setting targets up to 2050 to progressively lower import dependency and increase domestic self-sufficiency.
