The NSW Biosecurity Action Plan 2025–2026 sets out the New South Wales Government’s priorities for strengthening the State’s biosecurity system in response to increasing risks from invasive species, pests, weeds and diseases, which are intensified by climate change, growing trade and travel, and ecosystem pressures. The Plan recognises biosecurity as a shared responsibility involving government agencies, industry, land managers, Aboriginal communities and the wider public. It aims to protect agricultural production, biodiversity, Aboriginal cultural values, public health and the economy through improved prevention, surveillance, preparedness and response measures. The Plan establishes six strategic areas of action. These include enhancing surveillance, diagnostics and emergency response capacity; improving compliance and enforcement under the Biosecurity Act 2015 through a statewide regulatory framework; clarifying biosecurity obligations through guidance and awareness programmes; and strengthening the use of scientific research, data systems and Aboriginal knowledge in decision-making. Key actions include staff training for emergency responses, development of diagnostic capabilities for priority pests, implementation of traceability measures for livestock, improved data-sharing arrangements, and support for research on emerging biosecurity threats. The Action Plan also focuses on long-term biosecurity governance and landscape-scale risk reduction.
