The Research, Development and Extension Strategy 2025–2030 establishes the research, development and extension priorities of the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development for 2025–2030. It covers agriculture, livestock, fisheries, aquaculture and forestry, seeking to strengthen productivity, sustainability, safety and economic growth. Its four strategic priorities are future-ready production, biosecurity preparation and response, climate-resilient primary production, and sustainable resource and land management. Research investment will prioritise statutory responsibilities, shared government and industry objectives, issues specific to New South Wales, and the maintenance of strategic scientific capability. Biosecurity research will improve surveillance, diagnostics, predictive analysis and control of pests, weeds and diseases, while supporting food safety, traceability and market access. Climate-related work will develop adaptation measures for extreme weather, reduce emissions intensity and examine livestock methane, soil and forest carbon sequestration, biomass, fisheries decarbonisation and blue carbon. Research on land, forests, freshwater and marine environments will inform sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, forestry and multi-use landscape management, including biodiversity, habitat, soil, water and carbon outcomes. Innovation priorities include emerging industries, agri-technology, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, circular production systems and resilient supply chains. Implementation will rely on long-term partnerships with First Nations peoples, research and development corporations, universities, government bodies, industry and private investors. The strategy provides for streamlined research agreements, transparent investment processes, potential establishment of a Research Endowment and Innovation Fund, and modernisation of major agricultural, fisheries and biosecurity research facilities. Extension programmes, demonstration hubs and digital services will support adoption of research outcomes by farmers, fishers, foresters and land managers.
