The National Urban Policy (2024) sets out the Australian Government’s framework for sustainable growth across capital, regional, suburban and peri-urban areas. It adopts a shared vision agreed by Australian, state and territory governments, centred on planning cities within existing urban footprints, improving housing affordability and supporting balanced economic growth and the transition to net zero. The Policy recognises First Nations knowledge, connection to Country and participation as integral to urban planning, environmental stewardship and inclusive community development. The Policy establishes three principal goals: liveable and equitable cities, productive and innovative cities, and sustainable and resilient cities. Priorities include affordable and well-located housing, access to health care, education, employment, transport and public spaces, and greater social cohesion. Economic measures concern efficient infrastructure, freight and transport connections, mixed-use development, digital connectivity, skilled workforces, innovation and links between research institutions and industry. Environmental priorities include biodiversity protection, green and blue infrastructure, emissions reduction, clean energy, circular resource use, water-sensitive design, climate adaptation, urban heat mitigation and disaster resilience. Implementation is guided by equitable planning, economic productivity, climate-resilient design, cooperative governance and evidence-based decision-making.
