Liechtenstein Forest Strategy 2030+.

The strategy establishes the long-term strategic framework for the sustainable management, conservation and development of Liechtenstein’s forests, building on the Forest Act of 1991 and the Forest Ordinance of 1995. The strategy recognizes forests as multifunctional ecosystems that provide biodiversity conservation, climate regulation, water protection, timber resources, recreation opportunities and protection against natural hazards. The document sets five overarching objectives: strengthening forest resilience to climate change, balancing societal demands on forests, conserving biological diversity, safeguarding protective forest functions, and maintaining the economic and ecological value of forests. The text focus on the adaptation of forests to climate change through the promotion of species-rich, climate-resilient and site-appropriate forest stands, supported by natural regeneration and sustainable forest management practices. The strategy emphasizes the restoration of a balanced forest-wildlife relationship to improve forest regeneration and ecosystem resilience. Biodiversity measures include expanding forest reserves and special conservation areas, protecting rare species and habitats, strengthening ecological connectivity, and increasing the retention of deadwood and old-growth characteristics. The strategy also promotes sustainable timber use within a regional circular economy while ensuring that forest management maintains ecosystem services, including water retention, carbon sequestration and soil protection. Implementation is supported through monitoring, stakeholder cooperation, periodic forest inventories, and evaluation mechanisms designed to track progress and adapt management measures over time.
