Guidelines for Regulating Marketing Practices to Prevent Food Waste in Takeaway Catering.

The Guideline at at standardizing marketing behaviours, implementing platform responsibilities, and promoting a social ethos of thrift and rational consumption. It sets out concrete measures addressed separately to online food delivery platforms and to takeaway merchants. For platforms it requires prominent prompts to consumers to order appropriate quantities, encourages provision and promotion of small-portion options, optimization of product information display, and scientific design of discount and order-combination promotion rules; it also requires monitoring of advertising and audio-visual content including livestreams that may promote waste. Platforms are encouraged to support merchants offering small portions through front-page display and targeted traffic and to engage in data collection and research on anti-waste standards. For merchants it recommends sound procurement, storage and processing systems, truthful display of prices and fees, avoidance of misleading promotions, offering multiple portion sizes, and inclusion of anti-waste training in staff professional development. Businesses should improve procurement, storage and preparation, determine appropriate quantities and disclose prices and charges. The Guidelines encourage varied portion sizes, accurate product information, reasonable minimum-order amounts, promotions avoiding overordering and staff training.
