The Act is formulated in order to respect and protect animals. The Agricultural Committee under the Executive Yuan is nominated as the authority for animal protection. The Act consists of 40 articles and divided into 7 Chapters. Article three defines animal, economic animal, experimental animal and pets etc. Chapter 2 deals with the measures that shall be taken in order to protect animals and pets. Chapter 3 regulates the experimental activities of animal for scientific purpose. Chapter 4 concerns the pets protection. Under the amended Animal Protection Act, a new provision has been added to ban the slaughter of dogs and cats, and to ban the sale, purchase, consumption, or possession of dog and cat carcasses, the animals’ internal organs, and food containing dog or cat parts. (art. 12.3). Further provisions concern the offences and legal responsibilities.
