National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2017 – 2025.

The National Biodiversity Strategy is a national strategy with a multi-sectoral approach in effect during 2017-2025 with a mid‐term review planned for 2020. Its vision is for the people in the Republic of Mauritius to enjoy a healthy environment and an enhanced quality of life, through the effective conservation, sustainable use and restoration of biodiversity in line with national and international commitments, while respecting local values. Mauritius will continue to work towards achieving a significant reduction in the rate of biodiversity loss by 2025, achieve ecosystem resilience capacity to climate change and start to build an ecosystem‐based economy which invests in the restoration of biodiversity values. To this end, the activities will be focused on: Integration of the ecological, social and economic values of biodiversity into decision‐making; Effective in‐situ and ex‐situ biodiversity conservation and/or restoration; Minimising the direct and indirect pressures on biodiversity and ecosystem services; Biodiversity mainstreaming in the public and private sectors; Effective information sharing, NBSAP monitoring and delivery; The ecosystem approach. Food security will be enhanced through greater reliance on a diversity of genetic resources. Special focus will be directed on the development of new cultivars / crops based on local genetic resources. Diversification of crops for local consumption and agricultural systems (e.g. agroforestry) will further help in this regard. Safer and better human nutrition will be achieved through a shift to sustainable agricultural practices and using methods of eco-friendly production and protection. Transition to sustainable agricultural practices will be made possible through introduction of new, environmentally friendly agricultural systems, sufficiently supported through human capacity and financial resources. Rural poverty will be reduced through the enforcement of fair and equitable sharing of benefits from biodiversity and ecosystem services. This NBSAP is intended to be a living document so that stakeholders can propose, submit and approve additional projects for inclusion as part of the NBSAP activity portfolio. The National Focal Point (NFP) is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agro‐Industry and Food Security (MAIFS). Cooperation between stakeholders is to be supported and strengthened for an equitable and transparent implementation of the NBSAP, notably through three working groups in Mauritius (i.e. Terrestrial Biodiversity Working Group, Agro‐biodiversity Working Group and Freshwater, Coastal and Marine Working Group) and the Rodrigues Environment Committee in Rodrigues. Memorandum of Understandings are drafted and signed by the focal point and lead stakeholders responsible for implementing each MAP and RAP target. Also, annual status reports on Monitoring and Evaluation of the NBSAP prepared.
