National Implementation Plan (NIP) for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.

The multilateral Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) aims to protect human health and the environment from these hazardous, persistent chemicals as much as possible. The implementation plan contains the entire spectrum of POPs in products, industrial emissions, waterbodies, waste, contaminated sites, pesticides, foods and feeds, including the substances of the Protocol to the Convention of 1979 on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution concerning persistent organic pollutants. The measures include monitoring compliance with the bans and restrictions on POPs in substances, mixtures or products, the continuous reduction of POP releases and specifications for environmentally sound recycling. The Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) is the contact point for the Convention. The NIP starts with a basic information on Austria including its political framework and legal background. Chapter 3 describes in detail the measures contained in the Stockholm Convention for reducing POPs such as pesticides, industrial chemicals, unintentionally released POPs (U-POP), stockpiles and waste and contaminated sites; and the form in which these provisions and measures for monitoring the environmental status have already been implemented in Austria. Chapter 4 builds on the analysis of the measures already implemented for internationally produced POPs, inspected products and U-POPs; and describes further activities needed to help implement the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants, specifically the most recently restricted POPs. The NIP implementation is based on the principles of public information, reporting and monitoring. The NIP is designed in 4 Chapters continued by a review in 2017 on Article 5 of the Stockholm Conventions on POPs and Article 6 of the EU-POP Regulation.
