The Provincial Sustainable Forest Management Strategy (PSFMS) for Newfoundland and Labrador (2014-2024) reflects Canada's commitment to ecological sustainability and environmental protection. The strategy emphasizes the sustainable use and conservation of forest resources through innovative and integrated management practices, balancing economic, social, and environmental goals. PSFMS is built on the development of policies that prioritize ecological and environmental sustainability, utilizing ISO 14001 Environmental Monitoring System and advanced remote sensing technologies. Landscape-scale, science-based policies enhance outdoor recreation, eco-tourism, water quality, biodiversity, and species protection, preparing forests for climate change impacts. The strategy supports diversification into bioenergy, biorefining, and engineered wood products. Collaboration with industry and academia explores innovations in fibre allocation and transport logistics, improving efficiency and sustainability. Continuous investment in research and development aims to improve forest resource inventory programs using tools like Lidar and remote-sensing data. Public engagement processes and five-year forest management planning are reviewed to minimize land-use conflicts. Enhanced public engagement ensures robust environmental protection guidelines. The strategy aligns with the SDGs, promoting biodiversity, ecosystem conservation, and sustainable use of natural resources. By maintaining and restoring terrestrial ecosystems, it supports food security, ecological production, and sustainable bioeconomy development. The province will undertake its first audit for an Environmental Standard in 2015 to gain market recognition for its ecologically sound policies, ensuring the sustainability of forest products. The 2014-2024 PSFMS builds on previous achievements, ensuring the long-term integrity of Newfoundland and Labrador's forests and supporting sustainable development for future generations.
