Action Plan National Program 103 Animal Health 2017-2022.

This National Programme 103, Animal Health, aims at protecting and ensuring the safety of the Nation’s agriculture and food supply through improved disease detection, prevention, and control. The Programme introduces applied research approaches, methods and procedures to control and solve animal diseases and animal health problems through the discovery and development of: diagnostics, vaccines, biotherapeutics, alternatives to antibiotics, biosecurity measures, animal disease models. The vision for the Programme focuses on the improvement of animal health research, with an emphasis on delivering effective solutions to prevent and control animal diseases that impact agriculture and public health. Therefore, the mission of the Programme is to deliver scientific information and tools to detect, control, and eradicate animal diseases of high national priority. In order to fulfil its commitment, the Programme identifies the following strategic objectives: 1) establishment of Agricultural Research Services (ARS) laboratories into a fluid, highly effective research network; 2) development of specialised high containment facilities to study zoonotic and emerging diseases; 3) strengthening the integration of animal and microbial genomics research programmes; 4) launching a research program to combat antimicrobial resistance bacteria, with emphasis on the discovery and development of alternatives to antibiotics; 5)development of core competencies in field epidemiology and predictive biology; 6) improving a technology-driven vaccine and diagnostic discovery research programme; 7) development of internationally recognised expert research laboratories; 8)increasing investments in animal health research, in order to achieve the sustainable growth and resilience of a safe food supply and agricultural production systems. This Action Plan contains general strategies and specific actions, organised under seven components and related problem statements: 1) Biodefense, including: foreign animal diseases, emerging diseases; 2) Antimicrobial resistance, including: ecology of antimicrobial resistance, alternatives to antibiotics; 3) Zoonotic bacterial diseases, including: brucellosis, leptospirosis, tuberculosis, Q-fever; 4) Respiratory diseases, including: bovine, porcine, poultry, sheep; 5) Priority production diseases, including: Johne’s disease, oncogenic viruses of poultry, enteric diseases of poultry, bovine mastitis; 6) Parasitic diseases, including: gastrointestinal (GI) parasitic diseases, hemoparasitic diseases; 7) Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, including: Pathobiology of prion strains, genetics of prion disease susceptibility, diagnostic, detection and prevention.
