Ecologically Related Species Bycatch Strategy.

The Ecologically Related Species (ERS) Bycatch Strategy of the CCSBT establishes a structured, risk-based framework to minimize the impacts of southern bluefin tuna fisheries on ecologically related species, including seabirds, sharks, marine mammals, and other non-target species. The Strategy strengthens requirements for data collection, monitoring, and reporting; promotes the adoption and refinement of mitigation measures consistent with best available science; and enhances ecological risk assessments to guide management responses. It emphasizes adaptive management, improved compliance, collaboration with other regional fisheries bodies, and capacity building for Members, while setting out clear objectives, performance indicators, and periodic review processes to ensure continuous improvement in reducing bycatch and protecting marine ecosystems.
