Wood Energy Action Plan.

The Wood Energy Action Plan, issued by New Zealand's Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in 2025, supports the implementation of the Wood Energy Strategy by setting out measures to expand the production, supply and use of sustainably sourced wood energy. The Plan seeks to strengthen energy security, diversify the national energy mix, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote regional economic development through increased utilisation of forestry and wood-processing residues, low-grade logs and biomass crops. It establishes actions to improve wood fibre availability, facilitate private investment, reduce barriers to adoption, expand export opportunities, improve market transparency and coordination, and promote sustainable sourcing practices. Measures include support for biomass aggregation and logistics, short-rotation forestry and biomass planting programmes, investment facilitation, technology demonstration projects, market data collection, development of industry standards, and research on life-cycle emissions and sustainability impacts. The Plan assigns implementation responsibilities to relevant government agencies and promotes collaboration with industry, regional stakeholders and Māori communities to support the growth of a sustainable wood energy sector.
