This Commencement Order brings into force the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012 on 28 June 2013. Made by the Governor-General in Council under section 2(1) of the Act, the Order serves a procedural function by specifying the date on which the Act becomes operative. The instrument does not establish substantive environmental requirements or regulatory measures, but provides the legal mechanism for the implementation of the 2012 Act. It is administered by the Ministry for the Environment and the Order forms part of the statutory process for activating the environmental management framework applicable to activities in New Zealand’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.
