The National Agricultural Mechanization Strategy (2026–2035) establishes Ethiopia’s national framework for transforming agriculture through the expanded use of mechanization across crop production, livestock, fisheries, irrigation, forestry, natural resource management, post-harvest handling and agro-processing. The Strategy recognises that Ethiopian agriculture remains heavily dependent on traditional tools and animal traction despite substantial agricultural potential. The vision of the strategy is to achieve a mechanized agricultural production system by 2035 that contributes to agricultural transformation, economic development and national prosperity. Its objective is to improve efficiency, productivity and sustainability while reducing production losses through the adoption of appropriate mechanization technologies. Strategic targets include increasing farm power density, expanding the use of harvesting and precision agriculture technologies, reducing post-harvest losses, improving mechanization in livestock and fisheries value chains, supporting soil conservation and irrigation development, and reducing environmental impacts associated with agricultural production. Implementation is structured around seven strategic pillars: strengthening institutional and human capacity; expanding research, innovation, extension and training; promoting mechanization service provision and digital service platforms; advancing smart agriculture, precision farming and artificial intelligence applications; improving access to finance and insurance; developing local machinery manufacturing and assembly industries through public-private partnerships; and integrating cross-cutting issues such as gender inclusion, youth participation, environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
