Priority objective of the control programme is to ensure the survival of the Common Squirrel in the long term and to limit, as much as possible, the numerical and distributional decline of this species. To this end the aim of this Strategy is to halt or limit the expansion of the Grey Squirrel, and maintain or re-establish viable populations of the Common Squirrel in the widest possible portion of the original distribution area. As many of the actions envisaged fall within the competences of regional and provincial administrations, the success of the plan depends on the adoption, by these bodies, of the present intervention and operational strategy and guidelines. As the implementation of control and eradication measures for the grey squirrel requires careful planning, this Strategy deems useful to provide for the creation of a working group, consisting of experts in grey squirrel ecology and management, capable of ensuring constant coordination of monitoring, trapping and evaluation of results.
