This Recommendation sets transitional management measures for the sustainable exploitation of rapa whelk in the Black Sea (geographical subarea 29) consistent with the precautionary approach. These measures for commercial fishing activities exploiting rapa whelk shall be the basis for the implementation of future management measures in 2027, which shall be designed to guarantee the maintenance of stocks above levels that can produce maximum sustainable yield and optimize sustainable and relatively stable fisheries. This Recommendation requires the contracting parties and cooperating non-contracting parties actively fishing in the Black Sea to implement such transitional management measures for the concerned fisheries and in accordance with the objectives set by this recommendation. These measures also target the monitoring of catches and the reduction of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities in GSA 29. This Recommendation promotes the active involvement of the fishing sector engaged in rapa whelk fisheries in the Black Sea in view of a participatory approach to fisheries management.
