Recommendation by ICCAT Establishing a Management Procedure for Atlantic Bluefin Tuna to be Used for Both the Western Atlantic and Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Management Areas (22-09 BFT).

The ICCAT recommendation establishes a Management Procedure (MP) to regulate Atlantic bluefin tuna fishing in both the western and eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean management areas. Its objective aligns with maintaining tuna populations at levels that support Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY), addressing prior challenges in setting Total Allowable Catch (TAC) by incorporating Harvest Control Rules and Management Strategy Evaluation for a robust, precautionary approach. The MP, applied every three years starting in 2023, aims to ensure stock sustainability, minimize the probability of stock depletion below biological limits, maximize catch levels sustainably, and maintain TAC stability within set limits. It includes a 30-year stock status projection, stakeholder involvement, exceptional circumstances protocols, and periodic performance reviews. This structured approach balances conservation and yield objectives to support long-term bluefin tuna population health and fishery stability. The text consists of 13 Articles and 3 Annexes.
