This resolution establishes updated conservation measures for silky sharks (Carcharhinus falciformis) within the IATTC Convention Area for 2026–2028, replacing Resolution C-23-08. It mandates the continuation of long-term sampling programs in Central American shark fisheries and prohibits the retention, landing, or transshipment of silky sharks by purse-seine vessels, requiring live release whenever possible. Longline vessels are instructed to limit silky shark bycatch to 20% of total catch by weight and restrict the capture of juveniles under 100 cm to 20% of total individuals caught, with compliance monitored through inspection, certification, and data reporting mechanisms. The resolution also introduces temporal prohibitions on the use of steel leaders in fisheries exceeding 20% silky shark bycatch and mandates closure periods in pupping areas identified by scientific studies. Finally, it emphasizes improved data collection, reporting, and research on bycatch mitigation, shark survival, and the appropriateness of catch limits to strengthen future management recommendations.
