Australia’s 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) sets an economy-wide target to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 62–70% below 2005 levels by 2035, implemented as an emissions budget for 2031–2035. This commitment aligns with the Paris Agreement and Australia’s legislated Climate Change Act 2022, which mandates consideration of independent advice from the Climate Change Authority. The target builds on the 2030 goal of a 43% reduction and net zero by 2050, representing a significant increase in ambition. It is supported by the Net Zero Plan and six sectoral emissions reduction plans covering electricity, transport, industry, agriculture and land, resources, and the built environment. The NDC reflects Australia’s response to accelerating climate impacts, including extreme weather events and economic risks, and positions the country to seize opportunities from the global clean energy transition. Policies underpinning the target include the Safeguard Mechanism, the Capacity Investment Scheme, and the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, complemented by programs promoting electrification, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. Australia aims to achieve 82% renewable electricity by 2030 and expand clean energy industries such as hydrogen, green metals, and low-carbon fuels. The plan emphasizes fairness, gender equality, First Nations leadership, and workforce transition through initiatives like the Net Zero Economy Authority and regional workforce strategies. Internationally, Australia supports climate finance, partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, and measures to decarbonize maritime and aviation sectors. The NDC also integrates biodiversity and ocean-based climate solutions, advancing nature repair and blue carbon initiatives.
