This Resolution of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission establishes a management procedure for swordfish consistent with its conservation objectives, including maintaining biomass at levels capable of producing Maximum Sustainable Yield, keeping fishing mortality within sustainable limits, and applying the precautionary approach reflected in the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, while recognizing the needs of developing and small island developing States. Based on recent stock assessments showing the stock is neither overfished nor subject to overfishing, the procedure sets Total Allowable Catch levels using standardized catch per unit effort data, assigns the Scientific Committee responsibility for implementation and review, and provides for periodic evaluation, allocation arrangements, and consideration of ecosystem and multi-species impacts.
