Program for the Collection, Conservation and Use of Farm Animal Genetic Resources 2024-2030.

This Program establishes a national framework for the collection, conservation and use of the genetic resources of farm animals for the period 2024-2030. It describes the status of farm animal genetic resources, identifies issues related to their preservation and use, and sets out objectives and activities aimed at maintaining genetic diversity, with particular attention to local and endangered breeds kept in Estonia. The Program applies to several animal species, and addresses both in situ and ex situ conservation. The Program provides for the mapping, documentation and analysis of genetic resources, including population inventories, genealogical, phenotypic and genotypic characterization, and the collection and storage of genetic material such as semen, embryos and DNA. It includes the establishment and management of a gene bank, the development of procedures for the collection, storage and use of genetic material, and the integration of relevant data into national and international databases. The conduct of genetic and population research, including commissioned studies and expert assessments, is also foreseen. The Program defines the roles of responsible authorities and participating institutions, establishes coordination, monitoring and reporting arrangements, and provides for national and international cooperation. It also addresses the dissemination of information, capacity‑building activities and awareness‑raising related to farm animal genetic resources, and sets indicators for monitoring implementation over the program period.
